Digital innovation can help policymakers apply the lessons learned from the COVID-19
pandemic to solve some of the world’s most pressing health challenges, WelTel’s co-founder

In a keynote address delivered at the 2022 Health Research & Policy Symposium, Lester
discussed how the digitalization of health care can help address the social and economic
disparities that negatively impact health outcomes.
“In the immediate post-COVID world, we have an opportunity — and an obligation — to
rapidly update our health-care systems for better patient care through technologies that
support approaching the issues through an equity lens, providing digital services that reach
people and build stronger connections between health providers and patients,” he said.
In his talk entitled “Digital Solutions in Infectious Diseases Control,” Lester outlined the
evolution of the WelTel digital health platform, from its first iterations during the HIV crisis in
Kenya to the key role played by WelTel in support of Rwanda’s COVID-19 response. Lester
stressed the importance of setting clear health goals and choosing appropriate evidence-based
solutions that balance innovation with practical approaches that reach the people most in
